I have an incredible huge wooden trunk for sale, circa 1790 . Solid Oak with a brass inlaid plaque with the name Sir Henry Lippecott  (Bar)T.   It was used apparently for moving his dinner plate & silverware when he went to war in the field. Wow - I have used it to hide the xmas pressent from the kids for the last 15 years, it is no longer needed for that as they can open it now. Valued at £8000 when I bought it about 17 years ago from Philips. It is a piece for a large house or grand entrance. Totally unique antique.

Hi,

I am in the process of refinishing/stripping an old dresser I have. I stripped all of the paint off, sanded it, and applied fifty million coats of stain to get it the dark hue I was looking for. I'm FINALLY at the poly stage, and I applied my second coat this morning - yay!

What I'm wondering is this - is it normal for some of the stain to be coming off on the rag when I apply the poly? I'm using the kind you apply with a rag. Not a lot is coming off, but the rag was definitely stained the color OF the stain when I finished with the second coat of poly - also after the first, but not as much so after the second coat.

Also, do you think two coats of poly is enough? I have to be honest - I'm totally sick of this project and I just want it to be OVER at this point...hehe. But I also want it to be durable. The can says two coats is sufficient, but I keep reading about how you "can choose to do a 3rd or 4th coat" - is that recommended? As I said, it's a dresser, and I'll be using it to store my clothes in.

Thanks very much for any advice - this forum is great! I wish I had found it when I first started the project!

Thanks,

Abi :) aaynesATcnw.com

Hello,

My email address is lupowellATcomcast.net.

My first woodworking project, a CD cabinet, turned out really great until I applied thre stain. I used MinWax PolyShade, that contains a stain and poly finish. Big mistake! It was impossible to get a consistent finish. After 3 coats of the stain, I'm wondering if I can strip it all and start from scratch using stain only, with a poly coat afterward. How about using a staining gel?

My email address is lupowellATcomcast.net.

Thanks....

I am in desperate need of help,

I just ordered a custom built video entertainment unit for my home. When the unit arrived there was some adhesive residue on the top of the unit from a piece of tape that was holding a shipping blanket in place. I used a product called 'goo off' to remove the tape and messed up the finish on the cabinet pretty badly.

The cabinet is made of birch wood stained jet mahogany brown with a matte finish on top of it. The Goo Off changed the finish in that area to a semi gloss. It does not appear to have taken any of the color out but it definitely made that area where the tape was smooth and glossy and different from the rest of the unit.

looking for suggestions for a simple fix?

Question: I have used Old English Scratch Cover to hide some small scratches on the wood of an antique curved glass hutch, which was given to us by my Mother-in-law. After I covered the scratches quite successfully, I used the same rag to dust the ramainder of the piece. I've been accused of ruining it by making it darker than it was. Is it not true that the darkening quality covers the scratches & does not darken any finished area? Please respond & save my relationship with my Mother -in-law. I'm in deep trouble!
